The team behind director Karthik Subbaraj’s Dorothy has extended financial assistance to 25 transgender individuals battling serious health conditions, turning the film’s theatrical success into a gesture of compassion and social support.
Producers Jyoti Deshpande, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain, along with director Karthik Subbaraj, initiated the support programme during the film’s success celebration held at Kamala Theatre in Chennai on October 7. Representatives of transgender welfare organisation Engal Sahodharan introduced 25 individuals from different parts of Tamil Nadu who required medical and financial assistance.
The beneficiaries included people battling cancer and kidney failure, as well as individuals who had lost limbs and those with congenital blindness. Karthik Subbaraj personally handed over cheques to all 25 recipients.
The filmmaker reportedly expressed concern about the difficulties the beneficiaries might face travelling to the venue when the team discussed bringing them to the celebration. Despite their health challenges, the individuals chose to attend in person, expressing their desire to meet and bless the director whose film had moved them.
The initiative follows the emotional response Dorothy has received from audiences for its portrayal of human experiences, dignity and acceptance. The team said the film’s impact extended beyond commercial success, inspiring it to support members of the community portrayed in the story.
Written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj, Dorothy stars Keerthy Suresh, Sananth and Rishikanth in the lead roles, with music composed by Ilaiyaraaja. Presented by Jio Studios and Sikhya Entertainment, the film is produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain. The financial assistance adds a practical dimension to the film’s message of humanity, compassion and respect for every individual.
