Chennai, Oct 12:
The Greater Chennai Corporation has provided temporary accommodation to 26 homeless families who had been living on pavements in Chepauk and beneath the Peters Road flyover for several years.
The families have been accommodated at a GCC-run homeless shelter at Anna Square ahead of the northeast monsoon. The move follows the completion of 30 temporary accommodation units for homeless families in the Marina area.
The initiative is intended to provide vulnerable families with safer living conditions during the rainy season, when people living on pavements face increased risks from heavy rain, waterlogging and exposure to the elements.
The relocation forms part of the civic body’s efforts to provide temporary shelter to homeless families and improve their safety during the monsoon.
