Imphal, Oct 12:
Fresh violence in Manipur has left nine people dead, with several houses set ablaze as tensions escalated in parts of the State. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured assistance to restore peace, amid renewed concerns over the fragile security situation.
According to reports, the violence intensified during the night, with unidentified miscreants setting houses on fire before gunfire broke out between armed groups and security forces. Around 14 houses belonging to members of the Naga and Kuki communities were reportedly set ablaze.
The latest incidents have heightened fears of further clashes in a State that has experienced prolonged ethnic unrest. The fresh violence has also raised concerns over the safety of residents, the destruction of homes and the possibility of renewed displacement.
The Prime Minister has assured support for efforts to restore peace and normalcy. The authorities face the challenge of preventing retaliatory attacks, protecting vulnerable communities and ensuring that those responsible for the violence are identified.
The situation remains complicated by the history of mistrust between communities and the continuing need for effective security measures and political engagement. Restoring confidence among residents will require sustained efforts to prevent further violence and address grievances through dialogue.
The latest deaths underline the continuing challenges facing Manipur, where the return of lasting peace remains a key concern for both the State and the Centre.
