Chennai, Oct 12:
Water is being released from the Poondi reservoir through a link canal to the Puzhal and Chembarambakkam reservoirs to help meet Chennai’s drinking water requirements amid concerns over declining storage levels.
According to a Maalaimalar report, the Poondi reservoir, which has a total capacity of 3,231 million cubic feet (mcft), held only 592 mcft at the time of reporting. Around 530 cubic feet of water per second was being released from the reservoir through the link canal.
The transfer is intended to augment storage in the two reservoirs that supply drinking water to Chennai. The release assumes significance as water demand continues and the city’s reservoirs face pressure from declining reserves.
The availability of water in the main reservoirs remains an important concern for officials managing the city’s drinking water supply.
