Chennai:
Former Customs officer T Samaya Murali has turned a real-life smuggling investigation into a feature film, Enemy of the Smuggler, which seeks to highlight the growing threat of drug trafficking and the need to create awareness among youngsters.
Having served in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, Samaya Murali drew on his experience in investigating a case involving cargo containers transported from Gujarat using seemingly legitimate documents. The investigation revealed how documentation was allegedly obtained through illegal means to facilitate the movement of goods, including narcotic substances.
The film traces how the suspicious movement of the containers came to light, how the documentary trail was examined and how investigators uncovered the network behind the operation. According to Samaya Murali, the people involved were young men with no apparent criminal background who managed to operate without drawing attention to themselves. The film explores how the network functioned and how the investigation eventually led to its exposure.
Samaya Murali said he had earlier documented the case in a book and had now adapted the account for the big screen. He said the film was intended not only as an investigative crime drama but also as an effort to raise awareness about drug trafficking, particularly at a time when narcotics pose a growing challenge in countries such as India, which has a large young population.
The film features J D Chakravarthy, Lal, Radhika and R Sarathkumar in important roles, while Saran Sakthi plays one of the key characters among the younger cast. Samaya Murali has also composed the background score for the film.
Several ship-related sequences were filmed at ports with the permission of the Coast Guard, while portions of the film were shot in Dubai. The makers have attempted to recreate the circumstances surrounding the investigation in detail, combining the operational aspects of the case with a broader message on the need to combat drug smuggling.
Produced by Ram Prakash, Enemy of the Smuggler is gearing up for theatrical release. The makers hope the film will engage audiences with its real-life investigative background while drawing attention to the dangers of narcotics and the importance of preventing drug trafficking.
