New Delhi:
AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Wednesday moved the Supreme Court challenging the Election Commission’s conduct of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging that constitutional and statutory safeguards had been overlooked and the voting rights of eligible citizens were at risk.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi took note of a request by advocate Nizam Pasha, appearing for Owaisi, to list the petition on Thursday along with other pending cases concerning the exercise.
The Chief Justice indicated that the court would consider the request and examine the matter alongside similar petitions.
Owaisi’s plea comes amid mounting opposition criticism of the electoral roll revision process. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and 10 other prominent opposition leaders have also approached the Supreme Court over alleged irregularities in the SIR and related processes.
The petitions raise concerns over the implementation of the revision exercise and its potential impact on eligible voters.
