JAMMU:
Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered a case against the wife of an Army officer over alleged espionage-related activities involving the collection and sharing of sensitive information with foreign intelligence operatives, including individuals suspected of having links with China.
According to officials, the woman, who hails from Telangana and works as a freelance researcher, allegedly used artificial intelligence tools, including ChatGPT and Claude, to prepare analytical papers on sensitive security, defence and geopolitical issues. The subjects reportedly included developments along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, critical infrastructure projects in Arunachal Pradesh and the deployment of drones.
Investigators are examining whether the research was shared with foreign contacts under the guise of academic or consultancy-related work. Officials have said the woman had interacted with foreign nationals during an earlier internship with the United Nations and allegedly maintained contact with individuals suspected of links to foreign intelligence agencies. These allegations are under investigation and have not been established in court.
The case was registered at Gandhi Nagar police station under provisions of the Official Secrets Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Officials said the woman had been questioned and was cooperating with investigators. Reports indicated that she had not been arrested at the time of publication.
Investigators are examining digital devices, documents and financial transactions to establish what information may have been shared, with whom it was shared and whether any classified material was involved. The use of AI tools is also being examined as part of the investigation.
The case has drawn attention to the security risks posed by the unauthorised sharing of sensitive research and the need to distinguish publicly available analysis from protected information. The allegations remain subject to investigation, and the precise nature and extent of any information compromise are yet to be established.
