New Delhi,Ā  Oct 21:
India’s decision to leave experienced fast bowler Mohammed Shami out of the squad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand has triggered debate over the national selectors’ assessment of the veteran pacer’s fitness, form and future prospects.
Shami, 36, has been away from the Indian team since March 2025 and was not included in the squads announced for the New Zealand tour. His continued absence has raised questions, particularly given his record in international cricket and his ability to deliver in high-pressure matches. Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has questioned the lack of clarity surrounding the selection decision, calling for greater accountability and transparency from the selectors. The omission has also fuelled discussion among cricket followers about whether experienced players are being given sufficient opportunities to prove their readiness for a comeback.
Shami has maintained that he remains fit and committed to playing for India. His recent domestic performances have kept him in the spotlight, although his absence from the national setup has continued to invite scrutiny. The fast bowler has also pushed back against speculation about his ability to handle the workload required for red-ball cricket. He has indicated that he remains available whenever the team management requires his services. His decision to sit out Bengal’s Ranji Trophy match against Services also prompted questions, though the conditions in that low-scoring contest were dominated by spin bowling.
The debate comes at a time when India are preparing for a demanding tour involving five T20 Internationals, five ODIs and two Tests. Selection decisions will have to account for fitness, workload management, team balance and future planning, alongside past achievements. While the selectors have the responsibility of choosing squads suited to specific conditions and formats, Shami’s continued omission has renewed calls for clearer communication about the criteria used to assess experienced players seeking a return to international cricket.
