Renowned master jeweller and craftsman Vummidi Ethiraj, who was widely celebrated for crafting the historic Sengol (ceremonial sceptre) presented to India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, in 1947, passed away here at the age of 99 due to old age, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President C.P.Radhakrishnan and Tamil Nadu Governor R.V.Arlekar condoling his death.
His wife Sumitra Vummidi predeceased him. He was survived by three sons Vijaya Bharathi, Uday Kumar Vummidi and Vijayendren Vummidi, grand children and great grand children.
A senior member of the iconic Vummidi Bangaru Jewellers family in Chennai, he helped create the gold-plated, silver Sengol that symbolized the transfer of power from the British. The Sengol gained national recognition and renewed historic prominence when it was installed in the new Indian Parliament building by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2023, where Vummidi Ethiraj was personally honoured.
The Vummidi family is associated with a distinguished tradition of jewellery-making in Chennai.
In his message, Modi expressed deep sadness over the passing of Thiru Vummidi Ethiraj Ji, who will always be remembered for his efforts in crafting the historic Sengol that was presented to former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister wrote “Deeply saddened by the passing of Thiru Vummidi Ethiraj Ji. Hailing from a distinguished family based in Tamil Nadu, he will always be remembered for his efforts in crafting the historic Sengol that was presented to Former Prime Minister Nehru. Many years later, in 2023, it was our Government which had the honour of giving the Sengol a place of pride in the new Parliament building. During that time, I had the honour of meeting Thiru Vummidi Ethiraj Ji and expressing gratitude for what he has done for our nation and culture. His life and craftsmanship represent a remarkable connection between India’s glorious traditions and our national journey. My heartfelt condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti”, he added.
In his message, the Vice-President said “deeply saddened by the demise of Shri Ummidi Ethiraj, whose efforts in crafting the historic Sengol, a sacred symbol of India’s civilisational heritage, will always be remembered with respect and gratitude. His invaluable contribution to preserving India’s rich tradition of jewellery craftsmanship leaves behind an enduring legacy. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.”

His contribution to the creation of the Sengol, a timeless symbol of India’s civilisational heritage, righteous governance and the transfer of power at the dawn of Independence, will always be remembered with reverence and pride. His life and craftsmanship have become part of a significant chapter in our nation’s history.”
