Chennai, Oct 23:

The Tamil Nadu government has directed District Collectors, local bodies and departments to implement rainwater harvesting measures across the State to improve groundwater recharge and conserve water resources.

Under guidelines issued by Additional Chief Secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi, officials have been asked to inspect and repair existing rainwater harvesting systems and establish new facilities in government offices, schools, hospitals, residential buildings and commercial establishments.

Authorities will also identify suitable locations for structures such as recharge wells, percolation pits and trenches to conserve rainwater. The government has proposed awards to recognise outstanding efforts by districts, local bodies, educational institutions and resident welfare associations.

A statewide awareness campaign involving government departments, industries, educational institutions and community organisations will promote public participation in water conservation.
