Superstar Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has created box-office history by becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film of all time, surpassing the lifetime worldwide collection of his 2018 science-fiction blockbuster 2.0.
Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the action entertainer has grossed approximately Rs 710.35 crore worldwide within 11 days of its theatrical release on October 15, according to trade tracker Sacnilk. The film overtook 2.0, starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar, which reportedly earned around Rs 691 crore during its theatrical run.
The sequel continued its strong performance on Sunday, October 25, collecting an estimated Rs 25.70 crore net at the Indian box office. Its domestic gross stood at Rs 466.85 crore, while its net collection was around Rs 398.70 crore. Overseas markets contributed approximately Rs 243.50 crore to its worldwide total.
The Tamil version accounted for the largest share of Sunday’s domestic collections, earning around Rs 17.35 crore. The Telugu version collected Rs 4.50 crore, while the Hindi and Kannada versions contributed Rs 3.15 crore and Rs 70 lakh, respectively.
The film’s performance has been driven by Rajinikanth’s return as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, alongside a large ensemble cast featuring Ramya Krishnan, Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Jackie Shroff, Yogi Babu, S J Suryah, Vidya Balan, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Vijay Sethupathi. Hrithik Roshan also features in a special appearance.
Produced by Sun Pictures, Jailer 2 has surpassed several major milestones since its release. The film is now the first Tamil movie to cross the Rs 700-crore mark worldwide, strengthening its position at the top of the Tamil box-office rankings. The industry will now be watching whether it can reach the Rs 1,000-crore milestone.
