The sharp rise in vegetable prices across Tamil Nadu ahead of Deepavali has added to the financial strain on households already coping with the cost of essential commodities. In Chennai, small onions are selling at around Rs 100 a kg, while beans cost Rs 90–100 and green peas have touched Rs 200. In Tirunelveli, small onion prices have reportedly reached Rs 168 a kg. Reduced arrivals caused by rainfall, coupled with festive demand, have contributed to the increase. While seasonal fluctuations are common, the impact is particularly severe on low- and middle-income families, for whom even modest price increases can disrupt daily budgets.
The immediate challenge is to ensure that temporary supply shortages do not become an opportunity for excessive pricing or hoarding. The government and market authorities should closely monitor arrivals, wholesale and retail prices, and the movement of essential vegetables. Where necessary, cooperative outlets and public distribution networks can help provide relief by selling selected vegetables at affordable rates. Better coordination between producing regions, transport agencies and urban markets could also reduce supply disruptions. At the same time, consumers need transparent information on prevailing prices so that they can make informed choices. Any intervention must be based on reliable market data rather than arbitrary price controls that could discourage supplies.
Traders expect prices to ease after Deepavali if fresh arrivals improve, but this remains dependent on weather and market conditions. The episode underlines the need for a long-term approach to food-price stability, including better storage, transport infrastructure, market access for farmers and timely information on crop availability. Seasonal price spikes cannot always be prevented, but their impact on ordinary families can be reduced through effective monitoring and targeted support. For the government, the test is not merely whether prices eventually fall, but whether consumers can access essential food items at reasonable rates when they need them most.
