London, Oct 29:
Cristiano Ronaldo has beaten long-time rival Lionel Messi to win the inaugural Ballon d’Or of All Time (B.O.A.T.) fan vote, with his outstanding 2008 season for Manchester United being voted the greatest campaign by a Ballon d’Or winner.
Ronaldo’s 2008 season topped the rankings after he scored 42 goals across all competitions and helped Manchester United win both the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. He scored 31 goals in the Premier League to claim the Golden Boot as United secured the title.
The Portuguese star also scored in the Champions League final against Chelsea in Moscow. Manchester United eventually lifted the trophy after winning the penalty shootout, completing a memorable season for Ronaldo.
Messi finished second for his extraordinary 2012 campaign, when he scored 91 goals for club and country in the calendar year. Ronaldo’s 2017 season took third place, while Messi’s 2023 campaign finished fourth.
The top 10 rankings were dominated entirely by the two football superstars. Ronaldo’s seasons in 2008, 2017, 2016, 2014 and 2013 featured on the list, while Messi’s campaigns in 2012, 2023, 2015, 2011 and 2009 completed the rankings.
The B.O.A.T. initiative was launched as part of celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the Ballon d’Or. Fans were invited to select the greatest season from 10 players who had won the prestigious award at least twice.
