NEW DELHI:

The population census will be conducted across most parts of the country from January 25 to February 28, 2027, with March 1, 2027, fixed as the reference date, according to an official notification issued on Friday.

The notification, issued by Registrar General of India and Census Commissioner Mritunjay Kumar Narayan, said the exercise would be held in all States and Union Territories except Manipur, pending a further announcement, Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Ladakh and snow-bound non-synchronous areas of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

A revisional round will be conducted from March 1 to 5, 2027, the notification said. The reference time for the census will be 00:00 hours on March 1.

The government has also provided an option for self-enumeration from January 10 to 24, 2027, ahead of the house-to-house population enumeration. The exercise will be conducted in phases to account for the regions excluded from the January-February schedule.
