Madurai, Nov 3:
A young woman hailing from Madurai returned home on Monday following a harrowing ordeal in Russia, where she was detained by immigration authorities for inadvertently overstaying her student visa. Relieved to be reunited with her family, she nevertheless voiced strong grievances against the Indian diplomatic mission in Moscow, alleging that embassy officials failed to provide timely consular assistance or emergency intervention during her detention.
The student recounted that unforeseen transit disruptions and sudden flight cancellations left her stranded at an international transit airport, rendering her unable to depart Russian territory prior to the formal expiry of her visa endorsement. Despite repeated distress calls, emails, and appeals dispatched to the Indian Embassy seeking diplomatic intervention, she alleged that consular officials remained largely unresponsive, leaving her to navigate the foreign legal system without state representation.
Following formal immigration proceedings, Russian judicial authorities ordered her deportation and slapped a stringent five-year re-entry ban on her passport, dealing a major blow to her academic trajectory. During her stay in detention shelters, she reportedly learned that nearly 30 other Indian students enrolled in various Russian educational institutions were enduring identical predicaments owing to flight schedule changes and delays in visa extensions.
Civil society advocates and overseas student welfare associations in Tamil Nadu have urged the Union Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to look into the grievances raised by the student and establish standard operating protocols for distressed Indian scholars abroad. They emphasized that Indian diplomatic missions in foreign capitals must maintain responsive emergency hotlines to protect students from severe penal action caused by administrative and transit bottlenecks.
