Thoothukudi, Nov 3:
In a swift breakthrough, the Thoothukudi district police on Monday arrested five persons, including a local DMK functionary, within six hours of the brutal murder of a Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) functionary. The fatal assault occurred late Sunday evening at a local fuel station, sending shockwaves through the coastal district’s political circles.
Investigators cracked the case after thoroughly examining high-definition surveillance camera footage retrieved from the filling station and adjacent arterial routes. The video recordings captured the suspects intercepting the victim and launching a coordinated attack with sharp weapons before fleeing the scene, enabling special police teams to quickly identify the getaway vehicles and trace the hideouts of all five accused.
The brazen killing sparked severe unrest among party cadres and local residents, who staged an impromptu road blockade along the Sottaiyan Thoppu main thoroughfare. The agitation led to prolonged vehicular gridlock on key transit arteries, with protesters demanding immediate arrests of all conspirators, capital punishment for the assailants, and security guarantees for the victim’s family.
Normalcy was gradually restored after senior police officers reached the protest site, initiated reconciliatory talks with community leaders, and assured the agitators of expeditious legal action and fair prosecution. As a precautionary measure against potential retaliatory skirmishes, the district administration deployed over 200 armed police personnel and set up round-the-clock patrol checkpoints across sensitive residential pockets.
