Chennai, Nov 4:
The Tamil Nadu government has rolled out the ‘Vetri Special Vegetable Kit’ to shield households from festive price spikes in open markets.
Under the market intervention scheme spearheaded by the Cooperation, Food and Consumer Protection Department, a curated bundle containing 10 varieties of daily culinary vegetables weighing around 2.6 kilograms will be sold at a subsidised rate of Rs 100.
The state-level sale will be operational for three days, from November 5 to November 7, across 218 designated cooperative wholesale stores, farm-fresh consumer outlets (Pannai Pasumai Nugarvor Nilayam), and TUCS branches. In Chennai, the department has additionally deployed four dedicated mobile vegetable vans to service dense residential clusters and ensure easy access for working-class families.
According to department guidelines, each pre-weighed kit comprises 500 grams each of big onions and tomatoes, 250 grams of potatoes, 250 grams of brinjal, 200 grams of carrots, 200 grams of beans, 100 grams of green chillies, 100 grams of lemons, 50 grams of ginger, and one fresh coconut weighing between 400 and 450 grams, packed in an eco-friendly bag. Officials instructed cooperative outlets to strictly enforce a cap of one kit per customer at the uniform price of Rs 100 to prevent bulk hoarding and ensure equitable public distribution.
