New Delhi, Nov 6:
The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed an appeal filed by the Tamil Nadu government challenging the Madras High Court’s quashing of the charge sheet against the parents of prime accused Surjit in the Kavin Selva Ganesh honour killing case.
Kavin Selva Ganesh, a 27-year-old software engineer hailing from Thoothukudi, was brutally murdered on July 27 last year in Palayamkottai over an inter-caste relationship with a woman from a dominant community. The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court had earlier quashed charges against the woman’s parents, police sub-inspectors Saravanan and Krishnakumari, citing an utter lack of direct evidence or forensic trail linking them to the fatal conspiracy.
Following sustained hunger strikes by Kavin’s parents, the state government approached the apex court. However, a bench comprising Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Justice Chandrasekhar dismissed the government’s petition, expressing sharp dissatisfaction over the investigation: “A criminal case has been handled exactly how it should not be handled.”
