Linette Finds Her Chennai Rhythm Again

CHENNAI, November 6:
For Magda Linette, Chennai has once again become a place of sporting revival. Four years after finishing runner-up at the WTA Chennai Open, the Polish tennis player has returned to the city and found the rhythm that had eluded her through a difficult stretch of the season.
The 34-year-old secured her place in the quarterfinals on Thursday with a commanding 7-6(5), 6-0 victory over Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima, recovering from a closely contested opening set before taking complete control of the second.
The result carries added significance for Linette, who has endured seven first-round exits over the past five months. A combination of difficult draws, declining confidence and narrow defeats had disrupted her progress, leaving her searching for consistency on the tour.
Chennai, however, appears to have offered a timely change of fortune.
“I feel like I had a little bit worse time recently. And now I started getting my groove back here, which is great. So yeah, definitely, it helps… brings back good memories,” Linette said after her victory.
Her previous appearance in Chennai, in 2022, proved to be an important turning point. After reaching the final of the tournament, she carried that momentum into the following season, producing the best Grand Slam performance of her career by reaching the Australian Open semifinals in January 2023.
That run established her as a formidable competitor on the international circuit and demonstrated her ability to translate consistent performances into results at the highest level.
The recent downturn, however, has tested her resolve. Linette acknowledged that repeated early exits can gradually erode a player’s confidence, particularly when narrow defeats begin to accumulate.
“I think it was a combination of things. A couple of tough draws, and then you lose a bit of your self-confidence and then you lose from edge points. And then just like that something spirals down,” she explained.
Rather than abandon her approach, Linette chose to remain committed to the process, accepting that improvement would require working through difficult performances.
“It was important to keep working. Basically, you try not to panic and not find any excuses, which is not easy because you get a lot of criticism,” she said.
She also spoke about the difficulty of continuing to experiment with her game despite repeated setbacks, adding that the ups and downs were an unavoidable part of professional sport.
Support has remained an important part of that journey. Polish tennis great Agnieszka Radwanska, a former world No. 2, works with Linette as a consultant for approximately 10 to 12 weeks each year, offering experience and guidance through the challenges of the professional circuit.
With her confidence gradually returning, Linette now turns her attention to Friday’s quarterfinal against Japan’s Mai Hontama. Another victory would take her closer to a second Chennai final and provide further evidence that her difficult spell may be giving way to a more consistent phase.
For Linette, the immediate objective is not to recreate the success of 2022, but to build on the progress she has begun making this week. Chennai has provided the memories; the next challenge is to turn renewed confidence into results.
