Evergreen friendship songs in Tamil movies


Friendship is one of the commonly explored themes in Tamil cinema. Such movies managed to strike a chord with the masses.

Actor-filmmaker Sasikumar, known for being part of movies that glorify friendship, says, “It is one theme that lends scope for many situation and stories. Everyone can connect with a theme that revolves around friendship. It is an interesting relationship to explore.”

“Movies about friendship have immense potential to work at the BO. Everyone should have a friend in their life,” he added.

As Friendship Day falls tomorrow, ‘News Today’ takes a look at a few Tamil film songs that glorified the bonding between friends.

ANDHA NAAL
(UYARNDHA MANIDHAN)

Made in 1968, the song still stays fresh in the mind of music-lovers. The youthful rendition of T M Soundararajan and Sivaji Ganesan going through the emotions with perfection provides a delight for the audience. Written by Vaali and set to tune by M S Viswanathan, it is about a dejected old man recalling his childhood days and the happy time he spent with his friends.

NANBANAE
(SATTAM)

A song featuring Kamal Haasan and Sarath Babu, it speaks about two friends and the special bond they share. Composed by Gangai Amaran, it is rendered by a spirited S P Balasubrahmanyam and Malaysia Vasudevan. It is  a must play in all reunions in various schools and colleges these days.

KATTU KUYILU
(THALAPATHY)

An Ilayaraja special, the song, crooned by two best buddies in the music industry (SPB and K J Yesudas), was shot on two superstars of south cinema industry, Rajinikanth and Mammootty. The catchy lyrics and peppy music by the maestro made it a special one. Lyrics by Vaali stand fresh even today.

THOZHA THOZHA
(PANDAVAR BHOOMI)

A catchy song from Cheran’sPandavar Bhoomi’, it spoke about friendship between a boy and a girl. Written by Snehan and composed by Bharadwaj, the lines , ‘Aanum Pennum Pazhagikkittaa, Kaadhal Aagumaa? Adhu Aayul Muzhudhum Thodarndhaalum, Natpu Maarumaa?’ was a huge hit among boys and girls then.

MUSTAFA MUSTAFA
(KADHAL DESAM)

For the ’90s kids, Mustafa Mustafa was their guide for friendship. The song, composed by A R Rahman, was such a raving hit that it is still played in every college culturals. The numbers speaks about bonding between two college students and how they care for each other.

EN FRIENDS AH POLA YAARU MACHAN
(NANBAN)

As the title of the movie suggests, it was about three youngsters who share a special bonding. A Vijay-starrer, the song was the highlight of the movie. ‘Thozhanin Tholgalum Annai Madi, Avan Thoorathil Poothitta Thoppul Kodi, Kaathali Thandiyum Ullabadi, Endrum Natputhaan Uyarnthathu Pathupadi’ penned by Viveka won the hearts of many. Harris Jayaraj was the composer.

DOSTH BADA DOSTH
(SAROJA)

It is a fun song involving four friends on a journey. Composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja and directed by Venkat Prabhu, Vaali’s lyrics were young and bubbly in the song. The song celebrates ‘dosti’ in a nice way.

TAXI TAXI
(SAKKARAKATTI)

An A R Rahman song, this peppy number is a youthful celebration of friendship. It was written by Na Muthukumar and Blaaze, Benny Dayal, Javed Ali, Viviane Chaix rendered the song. It is a popular song even today in many clubs.
