Chennai: Rain is creating havoc not just in Kerala but also several parts of Tamilnadu.
According to reports, the water level in Mettur dam stands at 120.30 ft and holds 93.95 tmc ft of water. So, excess water is being let out at the rate of 1.70 lakh cusecs and villages along the banks have been given flood alert.
Inflow from the Cauvery at Hogenakkal is 2 lakh cusecs and houses along the banks are inundated. Those living near the river have been asked to move to safer places.
In Erode, 50,000 cusecs of water has been released from the Bhavani Sagar dam and flood waters have surrounded more than 100 houses.
In Namakkal district, 692 people living along the banks of the Cauvery have been shifted to five camps, say reports.
As heavy rain is pounding Theni district, the administration has declared a holiday for all schools. As more water is being released from the Mullaiperiyar dam, people living in low-laying areas have been asked to move to higher ground. The administration has also banned bathing in the swollen river.
Schools and colleges in Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Kanyakumari, are closed owing to heavy rain in the districts. There has been a landslide on the third hairpin bend of the Pollachi-Valparai road in Coimbatore, affecting traffic movement.
