Chennai: In an attempt to bring awareness among children of government schools about the functioning of Metro trains across Chennai, the students of Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Ashok Nagar, were taken on a free ride on a Metro train from Central to AG-DMS and Chennai Airport stations today by Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL).

Speaking to ‘News Today‘, a CMRL spokesperson, said, “In November alone, a total of 3,028 students got benefited. In October, a total of 3,090 children enjoyed a free ride. The educational trips for the academic year 2018-19 commenced from 21 June and, so far, a total of 21,449 students from government and Corporation schools have benefited. The trips are organised to cultivate awareness about how Metro trains have made a difference in the transportation scenario of the city.”

The theme of the ride was “Extending the frontiers of knowledge for the young minds” and we have been doing this for the past two years carrying out a ride every month, he said.

“During the trip, students were taught all the concepts and functioning of the Metro trains including the engineering, safety measures, innovations and technologies adopted. It will help them greatly in their studies as students will experience everything practically. We also taught them about the facilities available in these trains. Students enjoyed the ride as it gave them a break from school,” he added.

It is to be noted that just a few days ago, the students of Municipal High School, Alandur, enjoyed their free ride.

CMRL is continuing to bring in many facilities in the rail transportation sector of Chennai right from the introduction of smart cards for ticketing to bicycles for rent facility with read-on-rail, music concerts, food stalls and low balance services.
