TTV Dinakaran

Chennai: The Supreme Court has summoned Election Commission officials to explain if the AMMK party headed by TTV Dinakaran could be allotted the cooker symbol for the upcoming by-polls.

Dinakaran had moved the Supreme Court earlier this month seeking direction from the Election Commission to allow his party to use the pressure cooker symbol for the Thiruvarur bypoll.

Dhinakaran was represented by senior advocate A M Singhvi who orally mentioned his plea before a Bench led by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi.

The case came up for hearing today and the Supreme Court summoned Election Commission officials to appear before it and explain whether or not the cooker symbol could be allotted to AMMK.

It is to be noted that Dinakaran won the by-election held in R K Nagar Assembly constituency in December 2017 under the ‘pressure cooker’ symbol with a margin of over 40,000 votes.

Meanwhile, speaking to reporters today, Dinakaran expressed his suspicion over the alleged involvement of Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami in the Kodanadu Estate murders.

“If we observe Chief Minister Edappadi’s activities, it looks as if he might be involved in the murders. The suspicion is heightened by the fact that the people in authority who were accused in the case were the ones who took legal actions against the people who accused them,” Dinakaran said. Dinakaran also added that he is in talks with ‘few political parties’ for alliance ahead of the parliamentary elections.
