AIIMS foundation stone being laid by PM Modi at Thoppur, Madurai.

Chennai:Ā Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has completed two years in office. He has made several significant announcements in healthcare with C Vijaya Bhaskar heading the portfolio of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. News Today highlights a few of the important orders.

AI(I)MS HIGH

The State government, under the leadership of Palaniswami, had sought the approval to establish AIIMS in Tamilnadu. Coming up near Madurai, the 750-bed hospital will also have 15- 20 super specialty departments and cater to 1,500 out-patients per day and 1,000 in-patients per month.

INSURANCE CAP

For the benefit of people, in 2018, the Chief Minister passed a government order increasing the cap on the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS) from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. A dovetail agreement was signed to merge the existing system with Prime Minister’s Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) scheme.

LEADING BY EXAMPLE

The State leads in organ transplant across the country with a total number of 1,225 donors from Tamilnadu and since 2008, a total of 7,094 organs have been transplanted. On the occasion of 9th Indian Organ Donation Day programme in New Delhi, State Health Minister, C Vijaya Bhaskar, Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (Transtan) Member-Secretary, Dr R Kanthimathy, and other officials were awarded for topping the list, yet again in 2018.

CYCLING TO CREATE AWARENESS

Tamilnadu received the Swasth Bharat Yatra award under ‘The Best Performing State’ category at an event organised in New Delhi recently to promote healthy living by consuming nutritious food. The cyclothon ‘Swasth Bharat Yatra’ was organised by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

State Health Minister Vijaya Bhaskar received the award from Minister of State for Health Ashwini Kumar Choubey recently.

FOR ONE AND ALL

With Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) pumping in Rs 1, 634 crore, the Edappadi government launched Tamilnadu wide Urban Healthcare Project in 2017. The scheme aims to enhance the overall infrastructure in healthcare corridor, covering 17 cities in the State. The programme also taps the manpower capacity to handle non-communicable diseases.

FLEET FOR PREGNANT WOMEN

Early this month, the Chief Minister flagged off 15 new vehicles under 102 ambulance services for new mothers and infants. According to a official release, 146 vehicles are in service and 3,95,205 new mothers have benefitted.
