India woke to shocking news of terror attacks on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. At least 49 people were killed and more than 20 seriously injured. The mass shootings choked the entire world. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described the attack as one of her country’s darkest days. She said the suspects held extremist views that have no place in New Zealand or anywhere else in the world. An Australian citizen in his late 20s has been charged with murder in connection with the attacks. Two other people were arrested in the immediate aftermath of the shootings.

Amity and harmony should be part of life in a civilised society. Terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, and all those who support such acts of violence deserve condemnation. What is more shocking is that the Bangladesh cricket team had a narrow escape since they were about to enter the mosque to offer Friday prayers, but were alerted and went back to their hotel.

Terror attack on a country that is named the second peaceful nation after Iceland has shocked many. Hatred in the name of religion and caste should be blamed. What is more shocking is the shooter was live on social media when he launched the attack. This raises questions about Facebook & Twitter’s ability to manage harmful content on their platforms. Hatred and violence have no place in diverse and democratic societies.
