New Delhi: A team from CBI is likely to leave for London to aid the officials in the extradition case of diamantaire Nirav Modi ahead of the bail plea that is to be heard before a court there on Friday, sources said.

An officer from the rank of Joint Director has been delegated to reach London with documents.

The 48-year-old businessman has been charged of siphoning off over 2 billion USD from the public sector Punjab National Bank with his uncle Mehul Choksi.

According to a report appeared on UK paper, The Telegraph, he was spotted living in a ritzy locality in London. Based on the extradition requests from India and a Red Corner notice against him, he was arrested later.

“He appeared before the Westminster Magistrates’ Court wherein he contested his extradition to India. District Judge Marie Mallon denied bail to Modi and remanded him in custody till March 29, saying there was substantial grounds to believe that he would fail to surrender if granted bail,” sources said.

Following the incident of tracing Modi in a three-bedroom flat in the Centre Point tower block, UK Home Secretary, Sajid Javid certified the extradition request made by India early this month. The legal process for the same begun and a warrant was issued to him.

It is stated that he arrived in London in 2018 and had the privilege to travel off and from Britain four times until his passport was cancelled by Indian officials way back in February 2018.
