Chennai: It is well known that the rudraksha trees are grown especially in cold regions. In India, numerous rudraksha trees are present in the Himalayan region. However, S Krishnamoorthy, a resident of Mylapore is helping them grow in many temples here.

Speaking about it, Krishnamoorthy says, “I first saw rudraksha trees in Kalahasthi, maintained by a Siddhar there. I was fascinated by it and asked him the techniques to grow the tree and with the help of that I planted it in two temples in Chennai. One is Gangadeeswaran temple in Purasawalkam and the other is Vadivudaiamman temple in Thiruvottriyur.”

Speaking about the ways to plant the rudraksham tree, he says “The right time to plant these trees are during the months between September and December. “After planting, we will put some shade for it till the root gets stronger. Since rudrakshams are considered auspicious and holy there are certain procedures that have to be followed to plant the seeds,” he says.

According to him the seeds has to be planted 2 feet deep in the soil leaving out two feet breadth and length around it. With a combination of right manure and sand it takes a maximum of seven years for the tree to grow. rudraksha seeds can be grown in different types and he also said that rarest of the rarest rudrakshams can also be obtained by adding 18 different types of sand along with the manure.

“The types of sand cannot be revealed as it should be kept a divine secret. It was the instruction that I got from the Siddhar. Some of the rarest type that we got is the Siva Vishnu rudraksham, with Trishul and Sangu immersed in it.”

The rudraksham trees are maintained by him in the temples for the past five years now and he says that once a rudraksham is fully grown it will be used by the temple as rudraksham Malai for Lord Shiva. About the benefits of rudraksham, he says, “Those who wear it will give total calmness in the mind. That is the reason most siddhar are wearing this type of rudraksha. You will also not get affected by any negative energy.”

Krishnamoorthy also maintains the garden in Kapaleeswarar temple and when asked whether he has any plans to grow this tree here, he says, “I haven’t thought about it yet but when the time comes I will grow it here as well,” he concludes.
