Coimbatore: Depressed over failing in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) a 17-year-old girl from nearby Tirupur ended her life by committing suicide yesterday.

The results were declared yesterday. According to media reports, Rithushree scored 490 marks in the 12th Standard board exam and was hopeful of joining a medical course.

It is to be noted that in 2017, S Anitha, a 17-year-old Dalit girl of Ariyalur, committed suicide after she failed to score good marks although she had secured 1176 marks out of 1200 in her Class 12 exam. State-wide outrage over her death broke out and several political parties and students voiced their opposition on the entrance exam.

The ruling AIADMK in its manifesto during the Lok Sabha elections promised to get NEET exemption for Tamilnadu students. DMK on the other hand, assured the entrance exam would be scrapped if its alliance came to power. AIADMK’s legal efforts and legislative measures to avoid NEET were a failure, and the ruling government had set up coaching centres to train students for the test. The BJP has said there was no need to scrap NEET for medical admissions.

The exam, which is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to MBBS and BDS courses approved by the Medical Council of India and the Dental Council of India, was held across 154 cities in 11 languages and 2,546 centres on 5 and 20 May.
