Chennai: In a major infrastructural uplift to the neighbourhood, the Corporation has decided to rope in architects and city development consultants, to re-design roads at Kodambakkam.
It may be noted that the latest move involves expanding the 2013 Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) policy, and shall focus on walking and cycling in road design.
According to sources from the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), which is working along with the civic body to offer solutions, “The project aims to create a dedicated space for cycling and walking, with better pavements and pedestrian-safe designs.”
Senior Programme Manager of ITDP, Ashwathy Dilip, explained, “Designers will have to collect information about existing, ongoing and proposed projects in the city and identify the potential areas for multi-modal integration.”
The report further noted that architects and consultants will have to “review current and proposed transport and urban infrastructure plans, map baseline information like mass transit corridors, public transport routes, bus stops, NMT infrastructure, accident hot spots and street hierarchy,” among others.
“This initiative aims to look at the city comprehensively and create a network of routes for walking and cycling,” she said.
She further noted that this aims to bring longtime solutions to several road network related issues.
Meanwhile, sources from the Corporation, revealed that authorities are in talks with top funding agents, including support from the State government, in this regard.
