Chennai: In what is said to be a double-treat for residents of K K Nagar, Chennai, the State government announced two development measures in the Assembly recently.
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced that to improve road infrastructure in the city and to ensure smooth flow of vehicular traffic, many bridges would be coming up, including one at P T Rajan Salai.
P T Rajan Salai is one of the busy roads in the area where traffic is high throughout the day. The stretch connects 100 Feet Road and many use it to reach Koyambedu via Vadapalani.
To ease the traffic on busy 100 Feet Road and Rajan Salai junction, the government has decided to construct a bridge and commuters have welcomed the move. The government also plans to construct world-class infrastructure at Government Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, K K Nagar, with an investment of over Rs 40 crore.
Rehabilitation care will be offered at the upgraded centre to ensure people discharged after trauma lead a normal life. The iconic government rehabilitation centre is known for developing ‘Madras Foot’.
The doctors and students of the hospital developed ‘Madras Foot’ to incorporate toe ring (metti) if a married woman is using the prosthetic. The model was later patented as ‘Jaipur Foot.’ The institute is part of Madras Medical College (MMC) and dean of MMC is in charge of the centre.
Currently, five students are doing MD in physical medicine and rehabilitation in medicine. And on the paramedical side, 25 students are studying physiotherapy and 5 students are getting coached in the artificial limb centre.
According to sources, the National Health Mission is coordinating with their expertise to improve the infrastructure as a world-class structure. And once the infrastructure improves, there will be more doctors, which would, in turn, lead to serving more patients and the institute would accommodate more students.
