Chennai: Setting an example for others, the Bharathidasan Colony residents at K K Nagar have taken upon themselves the initiative of segregating trash and putting them in the bins provided by the Chennai Corporation.

Bharathidasan Colony 642 Flats Welfare Association has been collecting trash door-to-door by their association conservancy workers for the last 15 years, instead of the civic body workers.

The association members decided to take collection of trash to the next level by segregating the waste before depositing them in the Corporation bins located in the colony entrance area.

The colony’s population is around 2,800 and they reside in 56 blocks. The association has bought three vehicles and hired three workers to collect the trash in the colony.

“We are segregating the trash in three layers as per the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) orders from 5 August onwards. Green colour bin is for organic and bio-degradable waste, blue bin is for plastic and other products, and red bin is for napkins and metal elements,” said association president D Manoharan.

“No one is following the orders of GCC. We are setting an example to other colonies to follow this initiative. People will deposit the trash in three bins themselves accordingly when our workers reach their homes,” he added.

The association also thanked the residents for co-operating with the trash collectors all these years and asked them to continue with the new initiative which would be helpful for the environment.
