Udhagamandalam: Nilgiris district has been reeling under rain and is one of the worst hit in the State. Six people have reportedly lost their lives.

AIADMK leader and Deputy Chief Minister O Paneerselvam visited the district to take stock of the situation there.

Paneerselvam visited the most affected places and interacted with the people there. He stated that the estimated loss is set at Rs 199.23 crore. The deputy CM had also earlier held a meeting with senior officials of the district to discuss the situation.

Heavy rain led to landslides and several parts of the district were affected, and six people have reportedly lost their lives. 1,700 mm of rainfall was recorded in Avalanchi.

The Deputy CM stated that a detailed report would be submitted to the Chief Minister by the officials and that a total of 1,350 houses have been damaged. He assured that temporary houses would be built in another 15 days.

Meanwhile, DMK leader MK Stalin’s remarked that the government had failed to take preventive measures to face the rain. Reacting to this, Paneerselvam said that the Opposition leader’s statement was politically motivated.
