Chennai: Madras High Court today refused to issue a stay order for the acquisition of  Vedha Nilayam belonging to former Chief Minister J Jayalaithaa. The stay order was sough by Jayalaithaa’s niece J Deepa.

Hearing the petition, the judge questioned what was Deepa doing when Jayalalithaa was alive.

The Court later transferred the case to a two judges bench. Deepa had said the acquisition of Veda Nilayam might hamper the inquiry by Justice A Arumughaswamy Commission into the death of Jayalalithaa since it was from the residence that she got shifted to Apollo Hospitals on 22 September 2016 and died on 5 December 2016.

Last week, the Tamilnadu government had issued a gazette notification, making it official that the Poes Garden residence of Jayalalithaa is a government property.

This came a couple of days after the State government deposited Rs 67.9 crore at a civil court as compensation to acquire the sprawling house.
