Chennai: Police have gunned down a notorious history sheeter during an ‘encounter’ in Chennai this morning.
According to sources, a team led by Ayanavaram Inspector Natarajan attempted to arrest Sankar, a ganja peddler and a rowdy, when the incident happened.
Sources said that on seeing the police, Sankar started to attack them. He also hacked a Constable named Mubaraq. “Hence, Inspector Natarajan opened fire in self defence injuring Sankar,” they said.
The injured Sankar was taken to a hospital by the police, sources said and added that he was however declared dead by doctors. The incident has sent shock waves in the locality and higher officials have rushed to the spot.
This is for the first an encounter death has happened in Chennai after Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal assumed charge as the Commissioner of the city police force.
