Chennai: With the daily Covid-19 cases mark nearing 6,000 once again, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has said that the recent spike in coronavirus cases was due to returnees from other States, districts and countries.
Today, he will review the Covid-19 prevention measures in Namakkal. On Saturday, he is expected to conduct a meeting with the AIADMK functionaries. Due to complete lockdown on Sunday, he will be staying at his residence in Salem and will return to Chennai on Monday.
A record high of 75,076 samples were tested for coronavirus in the last 24 hours in Tamilnadu even as another 5,986 persons tested positive for the virus to take the tally to 3,61,435.
After 5,742 Covid-19 patients were discharged, the number of patients who recovered from the virus crossed the 3 lakh mark to a total of 3,01,913, Another 116 died today leaving the number of active cases at 53,283.
Chennai alone recorded 1,177 cases. Cases in Chennai’s neighbouring districts continue to surge. Chengalpattu recorded 462 cases, Kancheepuram 291 and Tiruvallur 393.
