Chennai, Nov 20:Â In a move geared towards enhancing commuter convenience, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has introduced a cutting-edge digital QR-based ticketing system in collaboration with PhonePe. This initiative seeks to streamline the ticketing process, providing commuters with a hassle-free alternative to traditional ticket counters and long queues.
The QR-based ticketing system, officially launched by CMRL Managing Director M A Siddique at Nandanam, marks a significant step forward in the quest for a more seamless and efficient public transportation experience. Passengers can now avail themselves of digital tickets directly through PhonePe’s Switch platform, introducing a level of convenience that aligns with contemporary digitalization trends.
The new system retains the existing 20% discount, offering added value to commuters while simplifying the booking process. In its initial phase, the QR-based ticketing system allows passengers to book single journey tickets, with plans to expand its offerings to include return journey tickets and smart card recharges in subsequent phases.
Booking tickets through PhonePe is a straightforward process:
Open the PhonePe app and navigate to the Switch section.
Under the Taxi & Metro category, select the Chennai Metro icon.
Specify the origin and destination stations, along with the number of passengers.
Complete the payment via UPI.
Upon successful payment, a digital QR code will be generated within the PhonePe app.
This generated QR code serves as the digital ticket and should be scanned at both the entry and exit gates of Metro stations for a seamless journey, eliminating the need for physical tickets.
