EC denies ‘Pot’ symbol to VCK

The Election Commission’s decision to deny a common ‘pot’ symbol to the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) for the upcoming elections across South Indian states has sparked controversy, prompting the party to challenge the ruling in the Delhi High Court. Despite the setback, the VCK remains undeterred, asserting its intent to contest on the ‘pot’ symbol in Tamil Nadu, where it enjoys a significant presence. According to reports, the Election Commission cited the party’s failure to meet the minimum requirement of 1% of the total valid votes polled in the states for the third time, as mandated by ‘Para 10B of Symbols Order.’ While this ruling presents a hurdle for the VCK’s electoral ambitions beyond Tamil Nadu, the party is confident in its ability to overcome this challenge and continue its political endeavors. VCK Founder Thirumavalavan and General Secretary D. Ravikumar are slated to contest in the Chidambaram and Villupuram Lok Sabha constituencies respectively, likely under the ‘pot’ symbol. Despite the setback, Ravikumar remains resolute, stating the party’s intention to challenge the decision in court. He emphasized that in Tamil Nadu, where the ‘pot’ symbol is a free symbol, the party is entitled to contest without hindrance. Highlighting the party’s past electoral successes, Ravikumar pointed out that the VCK won four out of six Assembly seats contested in the 2021 elections, underscoring its grassroots support and organizational strength.
