Amidst a display of fervent support from party cadres, K Annamalai, the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), filed his nomination papers to contest in the Coimbatore Lok Sabha constituency. Addressing reporters after the filing, Annamalai exuded confidence in his electoral prospects, declaring his victory as virtually assured. The nomination filing ceremony transformed into a formidable show of strength for the BJP, with scores of party cadres waving flags and accompanying Annamalai in a grand procession to the district collectorate. Before submitting his papers, Annamalai paid homage at the Koniamman Temple in Town Hall, underscoring his reverence for the local culture and tradition. Accompanied by National Women’s Wing President Vanathi Srinivasan, Annamalai disclosed his total assets amounting to 1.48 crore, with a significant portion comprising immovable assets valued at 1.12 crore. Notably, Annamalai’s declaration includes ownership of approximately 52 acres of land, primarily located in his native village in Karur district. His wife’s assets, as per the affidavit, total 2.3 crore in movable assets and 53 lakh in immovable assets. Speaking to the press, Annamalai expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received from the people of Coimbatore, including minority communities, asserting that his victory is all but assured. Taking aim at incumbent CPM MP P R Natarajan and the ruling DMK government in Tamil Nadu, Annamalai criticized their alleged failure to contribute to the development of Coimbatore. He accused them of obstructing progress and cited the prolonged delay in acquiring land for airport expansion as a glaring example of administrative negligence. In response to demands for an apology from AIADMK candidate Singai G Ramachandran over a previous remark, Annamalai stood firm, refusing to retract his statement regarding Ramachandran’s college seat allocation.Â
