The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) plans to expand its fleet by adding 1,320 electric buses by the end of 2025, increasing the total to 4,500 buses, a 28% rise.Currently operating 3,200 buses daily and serving 32 lakh commuters, MTC aims to modernize its fleet by replacing aging diesel buses with advanced low-floor and high-floor models. Under the World Bank-funded Chennai City Partnership Programme, 1,000 electric buses will be procured through a Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model, according to MTC Managing Director Alby John Varghese.
This initiative aligns with the city’s goals for eco-friendly mobility and improved public transportation.
