The Pongal festival, a time of joy and homecoming, has once again highlighted a perennial issue that Chennai and its surrounding areas face—severe traffic congestion on the Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road. With thousands of people returning to the city after the holidays, the situation on this vital artery has become a logistical nightmare, particularly on the Trichy-Chennai National Highway. Junctions such as Singaperumal Koil, Guduvanchery, Urapakkam, Kilambakkam, Vandalur, Perungalathur, and Tambaram witnessed heavy blockades, leaving commuters stranded for hours. The chaos underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive strategy to manage traffic during peak travel seasons.
Traffic congestion during Pongal is not a new phenomenon. Year after year, the influx of vehicles—private cars, government buses, and private transport—creates a bottleneck, especially on GST Road. Despite prior warnings and advisories from the Tamil Nadu Transport Department, the lack of effective traffic management exacerbates the situation. One key takeaway is the necessity of proactive planning. Temporary traffic diversions, increased deployment of traffic personnel, and better coordination among transportation authorities could alleviate the burden on GST Road. The use of technology, such as real-time traffic monitoring and mobile apps to guide commuters, can also play a significant role in easing congestion.
Long-term solutions must focus on expanding infrastructure. Elevated corridors, bypass roads, and enhanced public transportation options could significantly reduce the pressure on GST Road. The Perungalathur bus terminus, for instance, could benefit from improved facilities and better connectivity to handle the seasonal rush.
While the authorities bear much of the responsibility, public cooperation is equally crucial. Travelers must heed advisories, plan their journeys during off-peak hours, and consider alternative routes whenever possible. Carpooling and increased reliance on public transportation can also contribute to easing traffic woes.
