Director AR Murugadoss has sparked excitement among fans by suggesting the possibility of a sequel to his 2002 blockbuster Ramana. During the audio launch of the upcoming film Padai Thalaivan, starring Shanmuga Pandian, son of the late actor Vijayakanth, Murugadoss remarked, “Let’s grow up… we’ll do Ramana 2. We’ll bring back our Captain.” This comment has fueled speculation about a potential continuation of the iconic vigilante film, with Shanmuga Pandian possibly stepping into the lead role .Ramana was a significant film in Tamil cinema, known for its strong social message and Vijayakanth’s powerful performance as a man who takes justice into his own hands to fight corruption. The film’s success has left a lasting impact, and the idea of a sequel has been a topic of discussion among fans for years. Murugadoss’s recent comments have reignited interest in the possibility of revisiting the story.
“I wanted to do a film with Vijayakanth but could not do it. I am thinking about doing one with his son (Shanmuga Pandian). When I was planning to do Kutra Parambarai for HotStar (now JioHotstar), a black actor was necessary for a character. That was when I came across Shanmuga Pandian’s Instagram profile,” said the Subramaniapuram fame actor-director Sasikumar.
He went on to add, “I have seen Madura Veeran before, when he was quite fat. However, when I saw on him Instagram, he looked leaner and taller, and his body looked beautiful. I asked him ‘How did you achieve this?’ He replied, ‘Sir, I worked hard for a few months to reduce my body weight’. I really liked it. I instantly thought ‘Only he could do this character’ and asked him for a test shoot. I shot his eyes first and was instantly reminded of Vijayakanth sir.”
Shanmuga Pandian, who has been building his career in Tamil cinema, is set to appear in Padai Thalaivan, which is scheduled for release on May 23. Directed by debutant U. Anbu, the film features an ensemble cast including Kasthuri Raja, MS Bhaskar, and Yamini Chander. The film’s music is composed by Ilaiyaraaja, adding to the anticipation surrounding its release .
