Padappai, June 7: After years of bureaucratic delays and pandemic-related setbacks, the long-awaited Padappai flyover in the bustling Oragadam-Sipcot industrial zone was finally inaugurated on Friday, bringing a major relief to thousands of daily commuters and industrial transporters.
The 700-metre-long flyover, constructed at the congested Padappai junction on the Vandalur–Walajabad Road, was initially proposed in 2019 to address the chronic traffic congestion in the 34-kilometre industrial corridor. This stretch is a vital artery for over 70,000 vehicles every day, including heavy container trucks heading to and from Chennai Port and Airport. The area also hosts numerous factories, warehouses, and educational institutions, making efficient road infrastructure crucial.
Initially budgeted at ₹189.81 crore with a target of completion in 18 months, the project hit multiple roadblocks. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 stalled progress, and the 2021 change in government further delayed the pace of construction. As a result, the cost of the project rose to ₹205.64 crore, and completion deadlines were repeatedly missed.
With the official inauguration on Friday, the Padappai flyover is now open to the public. Authorities and residents alike hope it will significantly decongest traffic at one of the busiest junctions in the Chennai outskirts. The flyover is also expected to boost industrial connectivity between Oragadam and Sriperumbudur, improving the movement of goods and enhancing road safety.
This development marks a key infrastructure milestone for the region, promising smoother commutes and better logistics support for one of Tamil Nadu’s major industrial belts.
