The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Tamil Nadu, warning of heavy rainfall in isolated areas across the state over four consecutive days — from June 10 to June 13. The alert also extends to the Union Territories of Puducherry and Karaikal, which are expected to witness moderate rainfall coupled with thunder, lightning, and strong winds during this period.
Forecast and Weather Conditions
According to the IMD, the weather pattern is being influenced by a combination of upper air circulation and moisture-laden westerlies from the Arabian Sea, which are expected to interact with easterly winds over peninsular India. These interactions typically lead to intense convective activity, resulting in rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
Isolated districts in Tamil Nadu, especially in the interior and western parts such as Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, and Dharmapuri, are likely to experience heavy downpours. Coastal areas including Chennai, Cuddalore, and Nagapattinam may witness moderate to heavy spells during evening hours, along with lightning and brief squalls.
The IMD’s yellow alert signifies a need for people to “be updated” and to remain cautious of potential disruptions due to weather. Heavy rainfall in short durations may lead to waterlogging in urban areas, traffic disruptions, and a temporary increase in river and stream water levels.
The department has also advised fishermen to exercise caution while venturing into the sea, particularly along the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts, where squally winds reaching speeds of 40–50 km/h are expected. Local administrations have been asked to stay on alert and ready with relief measures, especially in vulnerable and low-lying areas.
