The early mornings in Chennai parks are now echoing with the gentle steps of health seekers walking barefoot on specially designed 8-shaped pebble paths. Known for their acupressure benefits, these pebble walking tracks are fast becoming the favourite part of the routine for many residents, especially senior citizens.
Laid with smooth and rounded stones in a figure-eight loop, these paths are a common sight in parks like Natesan Park (T. Nagar), Jeeva Park (Kodambakkam), Anna Nagar Tower Park, and other corporation-maintained walking spaces. Health experts and walkers say these unique paths offer both physical and mental wellness.
“Walking on these pebbles stimulates pressure points in the feet, which improves blood circulation and helps manage joint pain,” says Dr. Balu Subramaniam, a physiotherapist based in Adyar. “The 8-shape encourages balance and gentle turns, improving coordination, especially in the elderly.”
The pebbled path also serves as a natural reflexology treatment. According to traditional medicine systems, the sole of the foot contains nerves connected to vital organs. Regular walking on uneven surfaces like pebbles can help activate these nerves.
“I was skeptical at first,” admits 70-year-old Rajalakshmi from Ashok Nagar. “But after two weeks of walking on the 8-shaped pebbled path in my nearby park, I noticed my heel pain reduced and my sleep improved.”
The shape itself plays a role. The figure-eight design naturally slows down walkers and encourages them to be mindful of their steps. It’s almost meditative. “It feels like a rhythmic dance of the body and breath,” says yoga instructor Suresh Kumar from Besant Nagar.
Even younger residents are catching on. “I walk barefoot on the pebbles after my run. It cools my body and somehow relaxes my mind,” says Ananya, a college student who walks at Semmozhi Poonga.
Park officials say they are planning to add more such pebble zones as part of wellness initiatives. These paths require minimal maintenance but offer maximum impact.
In a city where lifestyle diseases are on the rise, the humble 8-shaped pebble path is proving to be a low-cost, high-impact tool for daily wellness. All it takes is a few mindful rounds each morning — and your feet may just lead you to better health.
