Lack of parking spaces causes chaos in Chennai market areas

Popular market areas in Saidapet, T. Nagar, and Nanganallur are facing a serious parking crisis, leading to daily traffic jams and frustration for residents, shoppers, and shopkeepers.
In Saidapet, Jeenis Road has become a major traffic bottleneck. Vehicles are parked on both sides of the narrow road, leaving little space for movement. “It takes me nearly 15 minutes just to cross one stretch,” said Shahul Hamid, a shopkeeper. “Ambulances get stuck here often.”
T. Nagar, one of the busiest shopping districts in the city, faces a similar problem. Even though a multi-level car parking facility has been built near Pondy Bazaar, many people avoid using it. “The parking is expensive and not fully functional. So people park on roads and footpaths,” said Ramesh, a daily commuter.
Nanganallur has seen some improvement with the Chennai Metro Rail expanding parking at the metro station. However, surrounding streets remain crowded due to lack of organised parking and increasing vehicle numbers. “We need better planning. Every street has cars parked end to end,” said Lakshmi, a resident.
Residents say poor enforcement, street vendors taking up space, and the lack of affordable, well-managed parking lots are the main reasons behind the problem.
Authorities have promised better regulation, including the use of traffic marshals and more parking zones. But without quick action, these commercial areas may become increasingly difficult to access.
