Chennai, Aug 1:
The Tamil Nadu government on Friday commenced the house-to-house Population Census survey across the State as part of the nationwide enumeration exercise, with data collection scheduled to continue until August 30.
As part of the first phase, trained enumerators will visit households in both urban and rural areas to gather details on housing conditions, basic amenities and other demographic indicators. The data will be used to update population statistics and aid policy planning, infrastructure development and welfare scheme implementation.
Officials said over 1.15 lakh enumerators have been deployed for the exercise, supported by nearly 19,000 supervisors to ensure accuracy and timely completion of the survey.
Authorities have urged residents to cooperate with census staff and provide accurate information during the enumeration process.
The Population Census, one of the country’s largest statistical exercises, plays a crucial role in planning public services, including housing, education, healthcare and social welfare programmes.
Officials added that special attention will be given to ensuring inclusion of marginalised and remote communities, with enumerators instructed to revisit households if residents are unavailable during initial visits. Measures have also been put in place to address discrepancies and verify data through supervisory checks.
The government has also emphasised the use of digital tools for real-time data entry and monitoring, which is expected to improve efficiency and minimise errors. The collected data will later be compiled and analysed to provide an updated demographic profile of the State, guiding future governance and development initiatives.
