In yet another fillip to industrial development in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M K Stalin today inaugurated the new electronic equipment manufacturing facility of US-based Corning at the SIPCOT Industrial Park in Kancheepuram. The project has been established with an investment of ₹1,003 crore and will provide employment to around 840 people.
The new facility has been set up by Bharat Innovative Glass Technologies (BIG TECH), a joint venture between Corning International Corporation Limited and India’s Optiemus Infracomm Limited.
In an official release, the Tamil Nadu government said it has been taking sustained efforts to create more employment opportunities for youth and women by attracting large-scale investments. These efforts are part of the government’s broader vision of transforming Tamil Nadu into a USD 1 trillion economy by 2030.
The release further stated that ever since the DMK’s Dravidian Model government assumed office in 2021, special attention has been given to inclusive growth and widespread development. The government has also been working towards strengthening industrial growth across the state by creating adequate, high-quality infrastructure.
Pointing out that Corning International is one of the Fortune 500 companies, the release said the company is widely known for manufacturing components for mobile phones, laptops and its patented Corning Gorilla Glass technology, which is used in several electronic devices including iPads. Optiemus Infracomm, on the other hand, is involved in the manufacturing of laptops, mobile accessories and spare parts.
BIG TECH has now set up a state-of-the-art front cover glass manufacturing facility at the Kancheepuram SIPCOT Industrial Park. Notably, products here will be manufactured using Precision Glass Processing Technology, for the first time in India.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for this project was signed in January 2024, and the foundation stone was laid within six months, in June 2024. Just 17 months after the foundation stone was laid, the facility has now been officially inaugurated by the Chief Minister, marking the commencement of production.
