The present in‑charge Director General of Police (DGP) of Tamil Nadu, G. Venkataraman, has been placed on medical leave after being hospitalized yesterday, following a sudden chest pain.Venkataraman, who was appointed in‑charge DGP on August 31 after the retirement of the previous police chief Shankar Jiwal, had taken over from his predecessor as head of the Tamil Nadu police force.
In view of his medical leave, the state government has entrusted additional responsibilities to Abhay Kumar Singh, the DGP in charge of the state’s anti‑corruption and vigilance division, to act as the interim in‑charge DGP.
According to official notification, this temporary arrangement — necessary because Venkataraman’s leave is expected to last at least 15 days — will remain in place until he recovers and resumes his duties.
During this period, Abhay Kumar Singh will also continue overseeing the anti‑corruption wing along with the additional responsibility as in‑charge DGP.
Senior officials have assured that regular law and order operations across the state will continue without disruption. Police personnel have been instructed to coordinate closely with Singh to maintain smooth functioning during this transitional period.
Political analysts note that such temporary leadership changes in the police department often attract attention, especially as Tamil Nadu heads into a critical period with the 2026 Assembly elections approaching. Ensuring continuity and stability in law enforcement will be crucial in maintaining public confidence and administrative efficiency.
