Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi are scheduled to hold a closed-door meeting as they seek to finalise the appointment of the next Central Information Commission (CIC) head.

The panel — headed by Modi under the provisions of the Right to Information Act — will recommend the next Chief Information Commissioner and choose from a pool of 161 candidates for eight vacant Information Commissioner posts.

Currently, the CIC has only two functioning commissioners, while 30,838 RTI-related appeals remain pending.

The last Chief Information Commissioner, Heeralal Samariya, demitted office on September 13 after reaching the retirement age of 65, leaving the top post vacant for nearly three months.

The outcome of today’s meeting will be closely watched, as it will shape the leadership of India’s top transparency and accountability body at a crucial juncture.
