A road accident in Mayiladuthurai on Thursday morning left 27 school students hospitalized with injuries after a private van collided with a school van near the town bus stand.
The collision occurred as a school van carrying 31 students was returning from Nidhoor toward the school. As the vehicle reached the area near the Mayiladuthurai bus stand, another private van — also carrying students from various schools — crashed into the rear of the school van.
Following the impact, 27 students in the school van suffered minor injuries. Emergency responders and bystanders immediately rushed the injured children to the Mayiladuthurai Government Hospital for treatment. A medical team led by Chief Doctor Marudhavan provided care, and parents of the affected students arrived at the hospital in distress upon learning of the incident.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the collision. The driver of the private van, identified as Prabhu, is being questioned by authorities as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Officials confirmed that students in the private van were not injured in the crash. The exact cause of the accident is still under probe, and police are reviewing statements and evidence to determine whether negligence or violation of traffic rules contributed to the collision.
